Koch called the experience “exquisite,” but her memories also capture the ordinary parts of living inside Orion. She recalled the crew eating a cookie on the Moon’s far side, repeatedly asking one another not to move a foot in the tightly packed cabin and dealing with a toilet that initially did not start. Koch said she followed instructions from ground teams and restarted the system more gently, which got it working.

The extraordinary views remained close at hand. Koch said the Moon looked markedly different as Orion’s angle changed, and she could see mountains and crater rims in relief against space. She also described Earth as an electric-blue home hanging outside the window while everyday life continued inside the capsule.

The interviews were recorded in July and August, several months after the crew returned, and the episode was published Oct. 9.
