First atomic-scale confirmation of 2D d-wave altermagnetism in KV₂Se₂O
Researchers used helical edge modes of a topological insulator as a spin-selective STM probe to map spin patterns in KV₂Se₂O at atomic resolution. They observed checkerboard antiferromagnetic order and d-wave spin splitting, confirming altermagnetism—a magnetic state blending ferromagnet and antiferromagnet traits.
TLDR
Altermagnetism could enable ultrafast, low-power spintronic devices for memory and sensors without stray fields from net magnetization. This represents among the first direct real-space and momentum-space atomic confirmation of 2D altermagnetism, advancing quantum materials research with both fundamental physics and technological applications.
