Phys.org reports that Northern Hemisphere lakes have a stronger snow-and-ice cooling effect per square meter than nearby land: −14.4 versus −8.2 watts per square meter. The gap is especially important in late spring. The publisher says the research suggests lakes may play a bigger role in regulating climate than previously recognized.
