A premature engine shutdown did not stop SpaceX from completing the main objectives of Starship's 14th test flight. The vehicle reached orbit on Sept. 28, 2026, and released 26 Starlink V3 satellites, making the mission both Starship's first orbital flight and its first deployment of an operational payload.
The flight was also a reminder that Starship remains an experimental vehicle. SpaceX shortened the mission after the engine issue, trading a longer test plan for an earlier return.
An engine problem, then orbital insertion
One of the upper stage's engines shut down earlier than planned during ascent. Mission controllers initially appeared uncertain about whether the vehicle had enough performance to reach orbit, but they reassessed the spacecraft's condition and proceeded with orbital insertion, according to Reuters' account of the flight.
Starship then deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites. The payload was significant because earlier Starship tests had carried mock satellites rather than spacecraft intended to operate in orbit. The larger V3 satellites are central to SpaceX's plans to expand the capacity of its Starlink network.
