MIT engineers reprogram immune cells inside the body to target cancer and autoimmune disease
MIT News reports researchers used lipid nanoparticles to deliver mRNA directly to natural killer cells in mice.
TLDR
MIT News reports that in mice, about 80% of targeted natural killer cells were reprogrammed. Three of five mice with melanoma went into complete remission; tumors were eradicated after five injections in a humanized T-cell lymphoma model, and liver damage healed after one injection in mice with autoimmune hepatitis. The approach could bypass the time and expense of manufacturing these cells outside the body.
