I’m walking here! A new model maps foot traffic in New York City
MIT researchers have developed a comprehensive model of pedestrian activity in New York City, the first of its kind for any U.S. city. This model could assist urban planners in making informed decisions about pedestrian infrastructure and public space investments, and highlight how development decisions impact foot traffic. The study also identifies areas with high pedestrian volumes and significant pedestrian hazards, such as traffic crashes, and highlights the need for upgrades in these areas. The model can be applied to other cities, as demonstrated by ongoing projects in Los Angeles and Maine.
