Trial finds less post-surgery nausea and vomiting with ear defenders
New Scientist reports nausea or vomiting within 48 hours in 35 percent wearing ear defenders, versus 52 percent without.
TLDR
In a trial of 192 patients undergoing keyhole gynecological surgery, half wore noise-blocking ear defenders under general anesthesia, New Scientist reports. All received standard anti-nausea medication. The researchers did not investigate how the ear defenders might affect symptoms, so the proposed explanation involving noise and a stress response remains a hypothesis.
