Researchers rushed out a related math proof before OpenAI announced a ‘unique games’ proof

Quanta Magazine reports that Dor Minzer and students Yumou Fei and Shuo Wang posted their paper in September amid rumors of an OpenAI proof of the unique games conjecture. Their result concerns a weaker 4-to-1 version of the related 2-to-1 conjecture. OpenAI announced its AI-generated unique games proof on October 6. Quanta says OpenAI also released a proof of the 2-to-1 conjecture in an AI-generated manuscript that had not undergone human editing or independent expert review.
