@SmartScienceBREAKING: Reports of a plague outbreak in Russia are now circulating. A researcher in Russia died after breaking a test tube containing live plague bacteria. In response, Russian authorities placed nearly 200 people under medical quarantine. “The situation in Shelekhov, Irkutsk region, where a plague quarantine has been declared, resembles the Wuhan case,” the Russian political insider channel Nezygar warned. So far, however, officials say none of the identified contacts has shown symptoms, and their test results have come back negative. Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, reportedly passed away on October 1, 2026, just days after accidentally breaking a test tube containing live Yersinia pestis bacteria. She was hospitalized with severe pneumonia-like symptoms and placed on a ventilator, but succumbed to the infection. Although official government statements initially referred to the incident as an unknown, particularly dangerous infection, regional leaders later confirmed the cause was the plague. Because pneumonic plague is highly contagious via respiratory droplets and can be fatal if left untreated, the incident has triggered widespread concern over laboratory safety. However, health experts emphasize that the disease is highly treatable with common antibiotics when diagnosed early. All monitored contacts are currently symptom-free, and local officials are urging calm as a criminal investigation into potential safety violations is underway. source: Mother Jones.
