New image-processing method improves exoplanet detection in Webb telescope data
Researchers report 2–15 times greater sensitivity than standard techniques when processing James Webb Space Telescope observations.
TLDR
Small changes in a telescope can make it harder to remove the starlight that hides faint planets. Researchers developed a method that models starlight while accounting for those changes in Webb observations. They report the first detection of the known planet 51 Eridani b at a wavelength of 4.3 micrometers and say the method could extend to future observatories.
