Japan’s MMX Phobos sample-return mission is set for an October 20 launch
New Scientist reports that the mission aims to return a sample that may reveal how Phobos and Deimos formed.
TLDR
NASA says JAXA’s MMX spacecraft is scheduled to launch from Tanegashima Space Center on October 20, 2026. It is expected to reach Mars in August 2027, study Phobos and Deimos, collect more than 10 grams from Phobos and return the sample to Earth in 2031. Scientists hope the material will help determine whether Mars’s moons are captured asteroids or debris from a giant impact.
