American Home Shield scanned the real estate market to see which cities and states have the largest homes in the country. They crunched the numbers on half-a-million house and condo listings from Zillow, and filtered homes into two categories: new and old (pre- and post-2018). Here's what they found.

Key Takeaways

  • Homes in Utah have the largest median size — 2,800 sq. ft. — whereas among cities, Colorado Springs, CO, leads with a median home size of 2,760 sq. ft.

  • Honolulu, Hawaii, has the smallest median home size — just 825 sq. ft — and the Hawaii's average price per square ft. rate is the highest in America.

  • Among states, the median size of new homes (built after 2018) has increased in New Jersey the most, and are 54.3 percent bigger than homes built before 2018.

  • Among cities, new homes in Tampa, FL, have gotten 88.88 percent bigger than the city's pre-2018 inventory.

This one is too easy to explain. Almost every house in Utah, and I'm assuming Colorado as well, come with a basement which depending on the model will increase the square footage by 100% or 33%.

“They crunched the numbers on half-a-million house and condo listings from Zillow, “

And the validity of any results should be questioned.
