A privacy breach at the IRS: Taxpayer data wrongly shared with DHS, court filing says

A recent court filing reveals that the IRS mistakenly shared the taxpayer data of thousands of individuals with the Department of Homeland Security, as part of a controversial agreement to share information on immigrants. The IRS was only able to verify roughly 47,000 of the 1.28 million names requested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and for less than 5% of those individuals, the IRS provided additional address information, potentially violating privacy rules. The IRS has since requested DHS’ assistance in remediating the matter.
