Governo autoriza Sonae Arauco a abater 508 sobreiros para construir central solar para autoconsumo - Expresso

The Government has issued a declaration of indispensable public utility for the self-consumption production unit (UPAC) that Sonae Arauco, a subsidiary of Sonae Indústria, intends to build in the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, authorizing the company to proceed with the felling of 508 cork oaks, of which 172 are adults and 336 are young. The declaration, signed by the secretaries of State for the Environment, João Esteves, and for Forests, Rui Pereira, was published this Monday in the 'Diário da República', indicating that the felling will take place in a 2.8-hectare area of cork oak forest, and emphasizing the 'non-existence of valid alternatives' for the location of this UPAC, due to the 'landscape and topographical characteristics of the environment surrounding the industrial unit' and the fact that self-consumption units must be located near consumption points. In question is a solar power plant with a capacity of 13.3 megawatts (MW), to be installed on land adjacent to the Sonae Arauco factory (a Sonae Indústria and Arauco company dedicated to the manufacture of wood-based solutions), in an investment of €8.5 million. This investment is part of a more than €50 million bet that the group is making in the modernization of its factory, which today directly employs more than 200 people, in addition to 600 indirect jobs. The Government justifies the authorization for the felling of the cork oaks with 'the relevant public, economic and social interest of the undertaking in question, as well as its sustainability, since the project will contribute, on the one hand, to the decarbonization and energy efficiency strategies of the applicant, and, on the other hand, to the pursuit of national objectives'. Sonae Arauco has committed to afforesting an area of 6.35 hectares with cork oaks (exceeding the minimum legal requirement to replant 1.25 times the affected area).
