ICE nearly deported a Native American woman
Leticia Jacobo, a Native American from Arizona, was nearly deported from an Iowa jail due to a clerical error that resulted in an ICE detainer being mistakenly placed on her file. Despite being a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and having her tribal identification, Social Security number, and fingerprint records on file, Jacobo was informed by jail staff that she would be handed over to immigration agents. Her family quickly mobilized, utilizing social media and connecting with tribal leaders to prevent her deportation. The Polk County Sheriff's Office attributed the error to human error, stating that the detainer was intended for another individual. Jacobo's case underscores the potential for discrimination and the impact of aggressive immigration enforcement on Native Americans.
