The Open Invention Network looks to the future of open-source patent protection
The OIN has expanded the Linux System Definition and changed its financing model.
The Open Invention Network (OIN) has launched OIN 2.0, marking the largest change in its 20-year history with a refreshed license and expanded Linux System definition. OIN 2.0 members commit to sharing their Linux System patents and applications royalty-free, covering a broader set of open-source software critical to modern infrastructure. The updated Linux System definition includes cloud-native components and automotive packages, reflecting the growth of Linux-based systems. OIN 2.0 also introduces a fee structure to fund increased litigation against patent trolls, ensuring the sustainability and robustness of open-source patent protection.
