ICE Is Expanding Across the US at Breakneck Speed. Here’s Where It’s Going Next
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has embarked on a secret, monthslong expansion campaign across the US, leasing offices in nearly every state. Federal records obtained by WIRED show that ICE plans to place new facilities in or near major metropolitan areas, often in sensitive locations such as near schools, medical offices, and places of worship. The General Services Administration (GSA) is playing a critical role in this expansion, bypassing usual procurement procedures and hiding lease listings due to 'national security concerns'. ICE's expansion is part of a broader effort to combat what the administration has consistently portrayed as an 'invasion', with the agency receiving nearly $80 billion in funding and hiring more than 13,000 new employees.
