The Lede

Using a PricewaterhouseCoopers May 2021 report based on data from Bloomberg and CB Insights, Reddit user Landgeist color-coded and located the top 100 companies in the world. The locations correspond to company headquarters and the marker size indicates their total market cap, in US currency per billion. The US — the east coast in particular — is the region most densely populated with big companies, followed by clusters in Central Europe and China.

Key Details

  • There are only five trillion-dollar companies. Four are American — Apple ($2.1T), Microsoft ($1.8T), Amazon ($1.6T), Alphabet ($1.4T) — and the other is Saudi Aramco ($1.9T).
  • LMVH, the Paris based luxury company, is the biggest business in Europe with a $337 billion market cap.
  • There are no companies based in Africa or South America and only one from Australia — mining company BHP ($163B) — in the top 100.
