The latest Linux kernel release closes out the 6.x era - and it's a gift to cloud admins
Having run of fingers and toes, Linus Torvalds adds that the next version of Linux will be 7.0
The latest Linux kernel release, version 6.19, is ready for deployment and offers several performance improvements, particularly for cloud administrators. Key enhancements include initial support for Intel's linear address-space separation (LASS) to block side-channel security exploits, Arm's Memory System Resource Partitioning and Monitoring (MPAM) for better memory control, and a new listns() system call for container tooling. The release also introduces the Live Update Orchestrator (LUO) to coordinate kernel updates with minimal disruption to running virtual machines. Linux 7.0 is already in the works, with initial focus on GPU drivers, display support, and sensor monitoring.
