Using Microsoft's facial recognition API, Azure, HouseFresh scanned and analyzed a database of Instagram selfies and measured peoples' smiles to judge their happiness. Based on eight key emotions β€” anger, contempt, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness, surprise β€” they mapped happiness scores based on photo locations.

Key Takeaways

  • Overall, selfies from Utah were determined to be the happiest with a 74.5 (out of 100) score. Over 70 percent of photos analyzed from Utah had a "cheery grin."

  • Almost three out of every four residents in Concord, CA, were grinning in their selfies, making it America's happiest city.

  • Three of the top 20 happiest cities are in Florida: Orlando, Sarasota and Cape Coral.

Did this analysis account for the fact that many people fake smiles for social media or for the fact that the facial expressions put on display for display purposes don't necessarily convey the true emotion the person was feeling in the moment? Just curious, as that makes a difference and the explanation of the methodology does not make it sound that way. If not, this is misleading, a poor way to extrapolate data, and the conclusion is a reach.
