TLDR

Oché posted that books surpass movies. Naughtyrobot725 replied with a video of Roger Ebert calling movies a machine that generates empathy. Several users answered that books demand more individual effort yet deliver comparable immersion. Others noted that games or other formats can produce similar effects. Brent Matley observed that movies combine senses effectively while books place the burden on the reader. Kaeae stated movies may convey feeling better yet books encourage thinking more. The exchange continues among visible replies without a shared conclusion.

@TweetsbyOchePeople don't understand books are better than movies.
@naughtyrobot725Roger Ebert ended the argument once and for all.
@ZWildwoodEmbarrassing. By this logic video games are the greatest medium because people get so immersed in Candy Crush and Call of Duty they forget to feed to their fish. Not to mention the absurdity of conflating immersion in a narrative spectacle with "empathy"
@Idomeneus_OG@naughtyrobot725 Probably depends on the person. But books are better in almost every way for me.
@BrentMatleyI somewhat agree, as movies are a great vehicle to convey emotion, visually. A masterpiece can really bring all of the senses together. But books offer all of the above too, it’s just more of a challenge to obtain. The onus is on the individual to achieve this. Just think of how many amazing books have been adapted to the cinema screen. Therefore, I feel books still have a slight edge over film.
@schwinn3Ebert never felt what he's describing for a book? He only lost himself in movies, never books?
@BattyWandererbooks don't have Kensuke Sonomura choreography though
@kaeae@naughtyrobot725 Better media to feel? Yes. To encourage thinking? No.
@onomatopoeiatwtIt depends.
