Richard “Levelord” Gray, the designer whose maps helped define a generation of PC shooters, died on Oct. 12 at age 68, according to reports from PC Gamer and Kotaku. Apogee Entertainment announced his death and praised the legacy of his work on Duke Nukem 3D.
Gray entered professional game development after making Doom maps and joined the Duke Nukem 3D team in the mid-1990s. He later co-founded Hipnotic Interactive, which became Ritual Entertainment, and contributed to Quake: Scourge of Armagon, SiN, Star Trek: Elite Force 2 and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.
His best-known work included the Quake level “The Edge of Oblivion” and SiN multiplayer map “Behind Zee Bookcase.” He was also celebrated for hiding the message “You’re not supposed to be here” in a cheat-accessible area of Duke Nukem 3D.
Peers including John Romero and Apogee founder Scott Miller paid tribute. Miller told PC Gamer that Gray loved pushing game engines to their limits and shared his design techniques with colleagues. Romero remembered him as a gentle soul and an excellent level designer.
