Discord rolls out age groups with non-biometric verification options

That automatic process has limits. Discord acknowledges the model will make mistakes and says new accounts, accounts with too little signal and users in places where the model is unavailable may remain unconfirmed. The company specifically says the model is not currently available in the UK and Australia.

Manual checks now offer more routes

Adults who are not classified as adults can confirm their status through options that vary by device and region. Discord lists credit-card checks, Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing, a Google Wallet passport credential, AgeKey, an on-device video selfie and an ID scan.

The privacy details differ by method. Discord says card information is routed by k-ID to Stripe, while app stores share an age range rather than an exact birthdate. It requires facial age estimation to run on the user's device. For ID checks, Discord says vendors delete the submitted image after determining an age group and send Discord an age signal rather than identity details. Those are Discord's stated safeguards, not an independent audit of every vendor.

Core chat remains available

Adult accounts keep the existing experience. Teen accounts can still message friends, join voice calls and participate in non-age-restricted servers, but receive extra protections: messages from non-friends move to requests, sensitive images may be blurred or blocked, adult servers and commands are unavailable, and profile activity is shown to a narrower audience.

Unconfirmed accounts can also keep using core features, but adult content and some settings remain unavailable until the account is classified or the user completes a manual check. Discord co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy called age assurance “rightfully” controversial and said the company should be judged on model accuracy, corrections and future transparency reporting.
