Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 gives the RPG a new way to put its living-weapon companions at the center of a fight. In Merc Assault, players can choose up to six Blades for a mission, then move, fight and switch freely among them instead of treating them only as companions to a Driver.
Nintendo describes Merc Assault as a new action-battle mode and says combining Blade Specials will be important to winning. That makes the addition a distinct combat setup from the main game’s Driver-and-Blade partnership: in the original adventure, Blades grant Drivers access to weapons and powers, and each Driver can equip up to three of them.
A new Blade and a sharper return to Alrest
The Switch 2 Edition also adds MOMO, a Rare Blade with light and dark forms that change both her appearance and elemental affinity. Nintendo says she has her own quest. New outfit designs for Pyra and Mythra appear during exploration and in cutscenes.
The technical changes are framed as targets for the newer hardware. Nintendo lists 4K resolution in TV mode and full HD in handheld mode at 60 frames per second, as well as smoother, sharper cutscenes. Its product-page footnote says 4K requires a compatible display and that frame rates are capped at 60 fps for 4K output. The company does not provide independent performance measurements on the listing.
Released July 30, 2026, the package is an enhanced version of the game in which scavenger Rex and the Blade Pyra search for the fabled paradise Elysium across a world built on the backs of Titans. Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition includes the original Switch game and its upgrade pack; players who buy only the upgrade-pack content need the full Switch version separately.
Merc Assault is therefore not a replacement for the existing party system so much as a separate way to use its cast. For returning players, the clearest new wrinkle is direct control over the Blades themselves, with a larger six-character mission group and the ability to swap between them mid-battle.
