Sekiro: No Defeat will return as an eight-episode television anime beginning in January 2027, but it is not simply the theatrical cut divided into weekly installments. The anime's official site says the series follows the film's story while adding new episodes, scenes and cuts that were not included in theaters.
The announcement clears up an unusual release plan. ARCH producer Tetsushi Suzuki says the project began as an eight-episode TV series. As production continued, the team decided it wanted audiences to experience the animation and sound in a theater first, leading to an edited film that opened in Japan on September 4. Suzuki apologized that the production had not previously explained that the movie was an edited version or disclosed the television series.
The film was initially billed for a three-week run. A separate update on the official site says strong demand led some theaters to extend screenings, with additional engagements scheduled to begin October 2.
The TV version adds material left out of theaters
The weekly series will retain the movie's central story while restoring material that did not make the theatrical edit. The production is presenting that extra footage as a meaningfully different version rather than a longer cut with no other changes.
The announcement also introduces a television key visual built around Wolf and Kuro standing in a field of swaying pampas grass, with armored enemies and beasts closing in behind them. It is the first promotional image attached specifically to the newly disclosed TV version.
