Xbox CEO Asha Sharma introduced Xbox Labs in an Oct. 13 memo, describing it as a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists under CTO Scott Van Vliet. The announcement says the group will turn emerging ideas into experiences for players and developers, build in the open and share its tools across the industry. Xbox plans to measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.
Sharma tied the initiative to a wave of experiments that move and remix existing games. She pointed to Windows PC builds translated for Apple Silicon, games ported into browsers through WebAssembly and WebGPU, and major games remixed into other source code. Those examples are context for Xbox Labs, not announced projects from the team.
Whether this is primarily an AI program is less clear. Sharma’s memo discusses coding agents and says games share software’s write-run-test properties, but it never labels Xbox Labs a generative AI department. Rock Paper Shotgun reports that Microsoft told GamesIndustry.biz AI use would not be mandatory. Xbox has not announced a specific Labs game, port or release schedule.
