The Breakthrough Award is specifically intended for a title that creates new gameplay through creative ideas and technical or design challenges. Under the published selection rules, committee members nominate candidates and the Japan Game Awards Executive Committee chooses the winner. That makes the honor narrower than a general best-game prize: it recognizes the attempt to fuse two styles of play into one combat loop.

Two characters sharing one crisis

Pragmata is set on a near-future lunar base. Hugh arrives as part of a mission to locate missing researchers, but a lunar quake destroys the search party and leaves him injured. Diana rescues him, and the pair face the base's robotic threats while gradually learning to trust each other.

The Award for Excellence explanation praised both that relationship and the simultaneous-control system. It also highlighted the contrast between the moon-base setting and the hostile machines that occupy it. The result is a story premise and combat mechanic built around the same dependency: Hugh and Diana need each other's distinct abilities to survive.

Six years from reveal to release

Capcom first announced Pragmata in 2020. The awards page lists its release date as April 17, 2026, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom is named as its developer, publisher and distributor.

The company's producer comment on the award page describes the game as an effort to create a new experience by combining action and hacking, alongside a story in which its two protagonists confront problems together. The committee's two awards effectively recognize both halves of that pitch: the finished game's broader execution and the particular combat design that gives it its identity.
