Venris, the creator of the Total War: Warhammer III mod SFO: Grimhammer III, deliberately corrupted the overhaul so it would stop working with unauthorized reuploads, according to IGN's report.
In a statement quoted by IGN, Venris said the move was prompted by a growing number of unauthorized reuploads of SFO: Grimhammer III and by the use of AI in the process. Venris said they had "deliberately corrupted the mod to prevent it from functioning with such unauthorized uploads."
IGN described SFO: Grimhammer III as an overhaul of the base game intended to bring it closer to Warhammer lore, changing everything from campaign and battle mechanics to the economy and customization. Venris also said the project is "the result of nearly 10 years of passion and love for this community and the fantasy world" and that they do not permit anyone to take the work without permission, "especially not for AI-related purposes."
Venris also said the mod could become private if the conflict worsens. In the statement cited by IGN, Venris said: "If this situation continues to escalate, I will make SFO: Grimhammer III private."
Part of a wider AI-mod debate
IGN reported that recent weeks have seen an explosion of AI-generated mods, raising broader questions about mod creation and sparking questions about the legality of releasing them.
In that context, Venris said SFO: Grimhammer is the result of nearly 10 years of work and that they do not permit others to take it without permission, especially for AI-related purposes.
