Luminary developer says its “AI” voice actor was actually his wife

A negative Steam review blamed synthetic speech, but an earlier game update had already credited the Temple Guardian role to a first-time human performer.

TLDR

A player gave the Early Access RPG Luminary a negative Steam review after 0.4 hours, saying an “AI generated voice” had spoiled the experience, according to Dexerto. Refractive Entertainment replied that the Temple Guardian was voiced by the developer's wife in her first performance, not by AI. The studio's own Aug. 24 patch notes had already credited her work. A Reddit commenter identifying themselves as the game's lead programmer added that the recording was processed with effects to make the character sound ethereal, which may explain the confusion.

A negative Steam review accused the Early Access RPG Luminary of using an AI-generated voice. Refractive Entertainment's answer was more homespun: the performer was the developer's wife, trying voice acting for the first time.

Dexerto reports that the player marked the game “Not Recommended” after 0.4 hours, writing that the “awful AI generated voice” made the game feel off. The developer replied that his wife “might not be the greatest voice actress out there,” but said she was a real person rather than AI.

That explanation is supported by a record that predates the flare-up. In Aug. 24 patch notes, Refractive thanked the developer's wife for helping “in a pinch” with her first voice-acting performance. Her role was the newly added Temple Guardian, an introductory character who gives players backstory and objectives through dialogue.

The sound itself may have helped create the misunderstanding. In a Reddit discussion, a commenter identifying themselves as Luminary's lead programmer said they had applied several effects to make the Guardian's voice sound ethereal. The commenter also said no AI was used for the game's voice acting. Their identity was not independently verified, but the explanation is consistent with the studio's earlier patch notes.

Luminary entered Steam Early Access on Aug. 11. Refractive describes it as an ARPG-lite for solo or cooperative play and says the project is being built by a two-person team. The episode does not settle broader arguments about generative AI in games, but it does show the hazard of treating an unusual performance as proof of synthetic production.
