LoL Esports marked the start of Worlds 2026 on Oct. 15 with a blunt bit of tournament math: “Four teams, one spot”. The opening Play-In Stage decides which of those teams reaches the 16-team Swiss Stage, the next phase of the championship.
How the Play-In works
Riot’s official Worlds primer lays out a four-team, double-elimination bracket in which every series is best-of-five. The Play-In runs Oct. 15-18 in Los Angeles.
The opening slate pits Cloud9 Kia against Karmine Corp and FURIA against MVK Esports. Double elimination gives a team one loss of breathing room, but only the bracket winner advances. The other three are out before the Swiss Stage begins.
What comes next
The survivor moves into the Swiss Stage in Allen, Texas, scheduled for Oct. 23-31. That phase uses five rounds: teams advance to the knockout bracket after three match wins and are eliminated after three losses.
Quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Nov. 3-8 in Allen. The tournament then moves to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the World Championship Final on Nov. 14.
