Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is changing how the series tells its war stories. Most of its campaign cutscenes are shown through the player’s eyes, while small interactions let its traditionally silent pilot answer questions, respond to prompts and build relationships with squadmates.
The setup places the player aboard the Endurance, one of the Federation of Central Usea’s last aircraft carriers after an invasion by the Republic of Sotoa. The pilot is rescued from a life raft and eventually inherits the Wings of Theve call sign, a propaganda identity tied to the FCU capital. That makes the player both a combat asset and a public symbol for a country trying to hold itself together.
PlayStation Blog’s Phil Hornshaw writes that players can look around during scenes with the right analog stick, answer occasional yes-or-no questions with the D-Pad and react to prompts with the face buttons. Those inputs help define how the protagonist behaves and how other characters respond. They do not turn the campaign into a branching narrative: the feature explicitly notes that the story itself does not change based on those decisions.
Joker Flight stays in the cockpit with you
The player spends much of the game alongside Joker Flight, whose members appear in between-mission scenes, briefings and combat radio chatter. In the air, the D-Pad can send squadmates to engage targets, call them back into formation or order them to cover the player.
The feature describes one early mission in which Coster asks to break formation to help allied pilots who also belong to a famous rock band. Letting him go produces a grateful response, one example of the smaller character moments Ace Combat 8 uses to make a squad order feel like more than a tactical menu choice.
Radio traffic extends that approach beyond the player’s immediate team. Ground forces call for help during missions, commanders deliver tactical information, and overlapping transmissions are used to convey the pressure of a battle. If the player responds to some requests, those troops can acknowledge the intervention and may appear again in later missions.
The campaign launches across three platforms
Bandai Namco’s launch announcement sets the release for October 2 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Deluxe Edition buyers are due to receive early access on September 29. Bandai Namco Aces is developing the first mainline Ace Combat entry in seven years.
The publisher frames the campaign around reclaiming occupied FCU territory with three allied pilots. The new PlayStation feature adds the practical detail: Ace Combat 8 wants the player to experience that campaign from inside the squad rather than only through mission objectives and externally narrated cutscenes.
