TLDR

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Kerr has launched Vertical Slice for game industry professionals. Kerr says the publication aims to give workers a voice and hold power to account, and will rely mainly on reader subscriptions. Once its paywall begins, free readers will still be able to access select articles and files in its repository of pitch and design documents.

Chris Kerr, formerly senior news editor at Game Developer, launched Vertical Slice on Oct. 12 as an independent trade publication for game developers and industry professionals. The site is free to read through Nov. 2; after that, subscriptions start at £7.45 a month and most coverage will move behind a paywall.

The publication will focus on news and features rather than guides or reviews. Kerr told Kotaku that his goal is “fearless reporting that inspires, informs and interrogates,” while GamesIndustry.biz says its planned coverage ranges from investigations and labor stories to funding initiatives and developer profiles. A free Repository will collect pitch decks and design documents submitted by developers, with selected articles also remaining outside the paywall.

Kerr is self-funding the launch and is Vertical Slice’s sole staff member. He has commissioned freelance work from former Polygon reporter Nicole Carpenter and says he plans to reinvest in editorial after the publication reaches sustainability. The site will not carry traditional advertising alongside its journalism, though sponsorships are planned for the Repository and will be handled through a third-party sales agency.
