Orbitals developer Shapefarm has received a Platinum award medal and commemorative gifts from Famitsu. The game's official Japanese account thanked the publication for the package, while Shapefarm shared a photo of the medal and gifts against an Orbitals-branded backdrop.
The Tokyo studio called the recognition an honor and described Orbitals as its first original game. Its photo shows the Platinum medal attached to a bottle, with Famitsu magazines laid out in front of it. Neither official post gives individual review scores or explains the publication's award methodology, so the announcement supports the honor itself rather than a broader claim about critical consensus.
A two-player trip through space
Shapefarm and publisher Kepler Interactive released Orbitals for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 3, 2026. Famitsu's launch coverage describes a cooperative adventure starring Maki and Omura, two explorers trying to save their collapsing home space station from a cosmic threat.
The game draws its look from 1980s and 1990s anime and gives each player a different role in the journey. Two people can play locally on one console or connect separate systems through GameShare and a free global Friend Pass. The Friend Pass also includes a local multiplayer demo, allowing a second player to join without buying another full copy.
That co-op focus is central to the game's premise: progress depends on Maki and Omura working together rather than one player simply accompanying the other. The award arrives three weeks after launch, giving Shapefarm an early marker for a project the studio has framed as its first wholly original title.
