Buitopia DVD arrived on Steam on Oct. 9 as a short piece of animated interactive fiction. Its store page sends players through a surreal world to find a birthday gift for Jess, using choices, light puzzles and secrets to reach one of several endings. The PC release includes the DVD image itself, so it can be burned to a disc and played through a DVD player's low-resolution, interlaced menus. A separate physical edition includes a Steam key.
A game shaped by the disc
Creator Ben Wheele told Final Weapon that he made the project largely in DVD Lab Pro 2.0, an authoring tool that is no longer developed. Because DVD players do not offer a conventional save system, he built progress around passwords and knowledge of the world. He compared that structure to The Outer Wilds on a smaller scale: once players know enough, they can complete the game quickly.
The format also raised the stakes for testing. Wheele said burned copies cannot be patched after release, while the DVD programming language proved deeper than he expected.
Twenty years inside the menu
The project began in 2006, then sat abandoned after Wheele lost it on an old computer. After recovering the files years later, he kept much of his teenage artwork and finished the game rather than rebuilding it from scratch. That history became part of Buitopia DVD's themes. Wheele described Jess as caught between nostalgia's appeal and the danger of escaping into a distorted past.
