Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says Sega executives once wanted to end the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise entirely, forcing him to argue for its survival inside the company.
In a September 22 report, VGC cites an interview Iizuka gave to One More Game as Sonic marks its 35th anniversary. Iizuka did not attach a date to the lowest point, but described a series that had gone through both strong and difficult periods. During the worst of them, he said, senior leaders told him the whole franchise should be canceled.
“I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible,” Iizuka said. The decisive shift, in his account, came from outside games: the first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Released in 2020, the film became what he called his biggest milestone and “definitely changed the course of this franchise.”
