Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has expanded north with The Viking Sagas, a new DLC that adds the Danes, Saxons and Varangians as playable civilizations. The official launch article says the expansion is available on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation 5.
The package includes 15 single-player scenarios divided across three campaigns about Harald Hardrada. The story follows his path from Scandinavia’s winter battlefields to service as a Varangian in Constantinople, then toward the 1066 invasion of England. The publisher describes the arc as Hardrada’s transformation from an exiled hopeful into a warrior-king.
Three different approaches to medieval warfare
Each new civilization is built around a different part of the Viking Age. The Danes emphasize coastal raids, productive fishing and villagers, and rewards for destroying enemy buildings. Their strengths are designed to turn aggressive expansion into a steady supply of resources.
The Saxons lean toward defense, using fortified towns, infantry and a navy informed by Alfred the Great’s reforms. The Varangians look east through the Baltic and Russian river systems, pairing trade-based gold income with cavalry, ships and their namesake Varangian Guard.
Those additions arrive with shared regional architecture and several new battlefield pieces. The official overview names the Varangian Guard, Mounted Crossbowman and Longship among the new regional units. It also promises a rework of the existing Vikings civilization, more scenario-editor assets and some deliberately odd visual flourishes, including flaming birds.
The campaign is meant to connect those systems to Hardrada’s journey rather than present three unrelated historical episodes. Its three parts cover his exile, his rise as a ruler and his final invasion, with recurring allies and rivals linking the scenarios.
For returning players, the meaningful change is broader than a campaign pack: three civilization toolkits expand multiplayer and skirmish options, while the Vikings rework alters an existing roster choice. The inspected launch article does not list Game Pass availability, so the confirmed storefront and console availability is limited to the platforms named by the publisher.
