TLDR

Posts quote former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden describing a future without physical discs as depressing yet solvable. He notes that gamers keep buying physical media because of collecting culture and that the market supports it. Several users highlight Sony's control over disc manufacturing and discuss whether the company could license production to third parties after January 2028. @Pirat_NationFormer PlayStation boss says a future without physical PlayStation discs is “depressing, but solvable.” He says that physical media is still important to gamers, especially because collecting games is a major part of gaming culture. “The market has said they will continue to buy them.” Sony currently controls the manufacturing process for PlayStation discs, meaning third-party companies would need Sony to license the production process if physical releases are to continue after Sony stops making discs. Layden believes the situation could still be solved if Sony allows specialized manufacturers to produce PlayStation physical media.
@TheLastRonin714Sony: “No new physical PlayStation games after January 2028” Also Sony: “Publishers can keep reprinting existing games after 2028” So the factory can still print discs.. Just not for NEW games? If the machinery works, what’s the issue? Printing is printing. Make it make sense.
@RinoTheBouncerFormer PlayStation boss Shawn Layden believes the potential end of physical game discs as disappointing but fixable🚀 ✅Physical demand remains strong: Gamers continue to buy physical media, driven largely by the culture of game collecting. ✅Because Sony exclusively controls the manufacturing process for its discs, any future production relies on them. ✅If Sony stops making discs themselves, they could license the production process to specialized third-party manufacturers to keep physical games alive. I proposed this solution multiple times before, I sincerely hope our voices are heard, now that the last truly great boss for PlayStation amplified this idea. Keep video game discs alive because taking them away damages digital gamers as much as physical ones NO DISC 💿 NO BUY
@ManaByteSimple, there will no disc option for PS6 games at all. How is that hard to grasp for some people?
@vambubi@ManaByte What will people do with their ps4 and ps5 disc collections if they can't play it on ps6?
@TheGameVerseFormer PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says a future without physical PlayStation discs is “depressing, but solvable.” He believes Sony could license disc production to third-party manufacturers.
@RustClash@Pirat_Nation How are people supposed to use phyiscal discs if they get rid of the disc port
@MattMed9Said this before and I'll say this again If printing physical discs was that much of a strain on Sony's bottom line, why not spin off that division to someone else? The answer is they want to kill the used games market because they know you can PS5 games for cheap used
