TLDR

GamesRadar reports that an expert considers Japanese companies such as Nintendo, Capcom and Konami healthier because they have smaller teams, don't have frequent layoffs and don't pay executives $30 million. The expert also says they "didn't get swept up in the live-service trend, or into these mega-blockbusters with 500-person teams."

@GamesRadarJapanese devs are healthier because they have fewer layoffs and smaller exec salaries, says expert https://www.gamesradar.com/games/japanese-companies-like-nintendo-capcom-and-konami-are-healthier-because-they-have-smaller-teams-dont-have-frequent-layoffs-and-dont-pay-executives-usd30-million-says-expert/
@eurogamerWhy do Japanese studios suffer fewer layoffs? Because they have smaller teams and don't pay their execs $30m, says one expert https://www.eurogamer.net/japan-game-development-layoffs-exec-money
@oliver_drk@eurogamer Japanese developers also only earn a fraction compared to their US peers.
@Karai_Dan@eurogamer Do you really need an expert to understand this? Overheard is way lower in Japan. This isn’t speculation. Teams are smaller, salaries are lower, cost of living in Tokyo is far cheaper than any US city. There are also fewer middle manager/HR type jobs at studios here.
@Ma_nkotoWhoever you spoke to is wrong. It's because it's ILLEGAL. In Japan, if they want you gone, they put you in a room where you can do essentially nothing or the most menial tasks you can imagine and they hope you quit from before you basically go insane.
@TheNCSmasterJapan also has far better job security laws across the board compared to the west In Japan you can’t be fired just because the CEO wants a 3rd yacht or the shareholders feel the profit line is high enough
@BazBombadilI am once again thinking of when Iwata cut his salary in half to prevent layoffs for the lack of Wii U sales
@LRH_SuperfanI mean yeah that probably contributes but both of these things are downstream of the real reason, which is American studios thinking they're tech companies and engaging in cyclical overhiring and mass layoffs emulating the likes of Meta or Google (or literally being Microsoft)
