Gamers Clash Over Whether Release Order Beats Chronological Play in Franchises

Replies name Yakuza 0, Halo Reach, and Final Fantasy as exceptions.

TLDR

Tray posted that no game franchise benefits from being played in chronological order over release order. Metalik replied that Yakuza 0 is an exception because it was deliberately made as a starter game. ShawnRazor cited Halo Reach and Red Dead Redemption as series that can be played chronologically without losing anything. SyPoNecroCDi pointed to Final Fantasy, where release order is preferred and chronological order is not feasible for most entries. KJpixel14 added that Metroid Zero Mission works well as an entry point.

@tray790xI don't think there's a single game franchise that benefits from being played in chronological order over release order
@QuetzalPhoenixPeriodic Reminder that Metal Gear Solid V is one of the only video games where the narrative completely matches the mechanics of the actual game. They compliment each other organically and thematically. Because the actual story you are playing isn't just a spy thriller, you are playing the interactive "programming" of a man being brainwashed. All of a sudden the idea that you have to "do missions" "get a high score" and have a "hub world" don't exist in a limbo independent of the actual nuts and bolt plot. Yes, that mission was played 4 times in a row. Which one was the real one that happened in the story? All of them, because the "story" is a man getting tricked by AI into thinking any of this actually happened. His memories are the equivalent of a box of cassette tapes, labels faded, being played out of order. Forever. You are not watching the simulation, you ARE the simulation. How many games actually manage to do that? The only one I can think of is MGS 2, the difference is that Raiden was saved by Solid Snake, and Venom wasn't. He embraces it. "V has come 2"
@chainsawrezii dont recommend it for mgs but i really cant blame anyone for letting this be their last impression
@phujoshiMGSV is a masterpiece, and i think Kojima knew exactly what he was doing lmao
@Metalik_@tray790x Yakuza 0 is like the only game that’s an exception but it was deliberately made as a starter game
@ASSASSINDSR2006#reddeadredemption
@SyPoNecroCDiPeople say this and then a game series like Final Fantasy exists where you should absolutely not play that series in release order and the games aren't connected besides a specific few games so you can't play them in chronological order Just play 6, 7 original or remake, or 10
@MrElectricNickGuitar Hero Gauntlet but you play every single song across the games in chronological order 💀
@ZeroFeminineMetroid. Halo. Doom. Yakuza. Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest.
@ShawnRazorDefinitely not many that benefit, but certainly some that can freely be played in chronological order without losing something in the process Halo Reach and Red Dead Redemption being the biggest ones that come to mind
