TLDR

Polygon posted an article with the headline GOTY 2026 is the Weakest Field in Years. Replies from users including @ItsRyanHyett, @ManaByte, @MightyKeef, @TheBlackHokage, @_AmoryBlaine96, @K__Med, and @SynthPotato push back. They name titles such as Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Marvel’s Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Control Resonant, and Zelda projects. Several replies state the year features strong indie, AA, and AAA releases and call the headline an attention-seeking take. One reply notes ex-Polygon staff claims the outlet favors engagement farming.

@ManaBytePolygon admitting that they actually don’t play video games.
@ItsRyanHyett@Polygon “Two other games were received with similarly mild approval this week: Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Orbitals” “Just about respectful scores” Come on man.
@_AmoryBlaine96This article by @Polygon may be the single worst take of the year. A poor GOTY field??? Lack of variety?? We’ve had fantastic: 🔵Indie games 🔵More quality AA and mid-budget games than we’ve seen in years 🔵Interesting new IP 🔵Great sequels to established franchises 🔵Plenty of AAA blockbusters 🔵The biggest game of all time is still to launch! When it comes to #GameOfTheYear it’s normal for everyone’s 3 and 5/6 game shortlists to different based on genre preference etc. But when you broaden the scope to the top 10 games of the year, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s objectively (yes not subjectively) the best year since at least 2018. And for the top 20? Perhaps unprecedented. A very stacked year with a broad range of titles. #GOTY #GOTY2026 (My post from early in the year on this subject is in the comments)
@TheBlackHokageWhen you're forced to hit a quota for X amount of new published articles a day is when people start saying outlandish stuff for attention 🤣
@MightyKeefThis has genuinely been an insane year for games with still a lot of big hitters on the way. What is this headline
@K__MedPolygon just called 2026 the “weakest GOTY field in years.” It’s September 6. Absolutely wild to write off all these games: -Blood of Dawnwalker (Witcher 3 vets, million sold in 3 days) -Onimusha: Way of the Sword -Marvel’s Wolverine -Gears of War: E-Day -Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave -Control Resonant -Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake (if it ships in time) -GTA 6 lands November 19. Awards cutoff is roughly the next day. Most of the jury still won’t have played it. This isn’t a weak year. It’s the critics that only count 90+ scores in the “correct” genres, then act shocked when the rest of the rest of the industry looks at them sideways.
@TimoTweetssyou gotta be on genuine hard drugs to write shit like this, 2026 is the best year of gaming, maybe ever… we got: >Crimson Desert >007 First Light >Resident Evil Requiem >Saros >Nioh 3 >Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced >A Plague Take Resonance >The Blood Of Dawnwalker >Onimusha: The Way Of The Sword > we’re also getting: >Wolverine >Control Resonant >Silent Hill Townfall >Phantom Blade Zero >Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6)
@TheCartelDel@K__Med Ex-Polygon staff have told us the company is now pushing engagement farming over journalism. One day we’ll listen and stop engaging.
@ChrisRGunI know they’re pushing engagement bait, but they’re kinda right. A bit premature especially since it’s September and GTA VI is right around the corner but so far there’s no obvious GOTY. It’s more to do with how unusually good the 2020s have been than 2026 being bad, but still.
