Sega has introduced 17 characters who will cross paths with Makoto Daito during Stranger Than Heaven's five-decade story. The new character guide on Xbox Wire traces the game from 1915 to 1965 and puts fresh detail around the friends, rivals, merchants, musicians and underworld figures tied to Makoto's search for a home.
Makoto, played by Yu Shirota, is born to an American father and a Japanese mother. After facing persecution in the United States, he stows away on a ship leaving San Francisco for Japan. The voyage brings him together with Yu Shinjo, played by Dean Fujioka, and Orpheus, a merchant captain played by Snoop Dogg. Sega describes Yu as another mixed-heritage traveler seeking a new life; the two young men decide to survive together, even as Yu's ambition eventually puts him at odds with Makoto.
A cast built across eras
The wider lineup reflects the game's movement through five cities and eras. Akio Otsuka plays Kokura merchant boss Heigo Yashima. Moeka Hoshi appears as café waitress Tae Matsumoto, Tori Kelly plays aspiring singer Suzy Day, and Satoshi Fujihara plays Takashi, Makoto's sworn brother and a pianist whose gift draws Makoto back toward music.
Some of the most unusual casting depends on archival likenesses. Sega says it received formal consent from Bunta Sugawara's family and materials from Toei to build a CG version of the late actor; Takashi Ukaji voices Sugawara's character, Genzo Iwaki. For Amaru, a man hiding in Japan, Sega says Tupac's appearance is being made from archival footage and photographs under the permission and continuing supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment. The studio says that work does not use AI and that more about Amaru's role will be disclosed later.
The cast reveal expands a story Sega previously described as a long-running friendship and rivalry. Xbox Wire's May deep dive said Makoto and Yu's lives repeatedly intersect as they move through industrial districts, ports and entertainment centers, with music and show business becoming part of Makoto's journey alongside a new combat system.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch January 15, 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud. Sega says it will support Xbox Play Anywhere and be available through Game Pass at launch.
