TLDR

A post by @trsrpc showed a video and asked why a Final Fantasy game styled as a classic rendition uses random encounters. @BritbongTommy replied that the unpredictability makes resource management a bigger concern and encourages preparation. @vakozzzzzzz added that random encounters suit dungeon crawlers built around fear of the unknown. @I__HATE_SOCCER posted the meme "afraid you might Feel something?" in response to complaints about visible enemies. @rikuwru_ later clarified they like the game but have never enjoyed random encounters.

@I__HATE_SOCCERWhat's the matter "Enemies are fully modeled in the environment" boy, afraid you might Feel something?
@rikuwru_@ariennaminx Lol. It's funny because I've played more challenging games than this and have had fun. The issue isn't the challenge at all; it's just that I don't like random encounters and never have. Also, I still really like this game and love the ones that have this system.
@DrShyGuyDDBecause they're fun, next fucking question
@vakozzzzzzzrandom encounters were great in Dungeon Crawlers cuz they are conceptualized around the idea of the Fear of Unknown where every design choice is made in favour of making the player anxious to make any and every decision but Final Fantasy and other modern JRPGs just
@BritbongTommyThe unpredictability of how many fights you'll have to deal with makes resource management unpredictable, and so a bigger concern. This creates a tension that static encounters don't provide, and encourages preparation (interaction)
@gamesarentart@DrShyGuyDD I still don't understand why people have this aversion for random encounters. Did somebody put this on one of their top 10 worst outdated game designs ever or something and it just kinda stuck?
@FujynoMotherfucker you have a MAP at the top that shows you if you are nearing an encounter by flashing red the more steps you take
@FarFromSubtle@rikuwru_ @ariennaminx random encounters have always been disliked by a large portion of rpg fans. nothing wrong with being annoyed with them. OP is just digging for clout.
@trsrpc"Why does this Final Fantasy game made to be a rendition of classic FF have random encounters?"
@evilaj2010……you know what? Nah, this is bait. I’ve already seen stupidass awful takes about retro games from 25+ years ago. I’m not buying this shit.
