2XKO development team layoffs hit Riot Games hard
Riot Games has announced major 2XKO development team layoffs. The company is reducing the size of the League of Legends development team, which will cost about 80 jobs, or almost half of the game’s development team around the world.
The heads of 2XKO made the decision a few weeks after the game came out on all consoles. They said, “For a long time, player engagement hasn’t been high enough to support a team this big.”
XKO is Riot Games’ first fighting game (FGC). The 2v2 tag-team fighter, which was first called “Project L,” is set in the League of Legends universe and took almost ten years to make. It came out in early access on PC in late 2025, and then it came out fully on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on January 20, 2026.
Riot Games has announced major layoffs for its 2XKO development team, impacting nearly half of its League of Legends development team globally. The decision follows insufficient player engagement after the game's console release. Riot plans to maintain core support and continue with the 2026 Competitive Series, while focusing on key improvements suggested by the community.
