Digital Bros has discontinued development of Armed Fantasia, the crowdfunded role-playing game led by Wild Arms creator Akifumi Kaneko. The parent company of publisher 505 Games confirmed the decision in its fiscal 2026 results, citing repeated efforts to revise the game's design, changing market conditions and the additional investment needed to complete it.
The company also ended work on Directorate: Novitiate and a sequel to the free-to-play game Battle Islands. Digital Bros recorded €17.6 million in write-offs across those discontinued projects, but the filing does not break the figure down by title. A further €1 million in impairment losses brought the company's total non-cash impairment charge to €18.7 million.
A delayed Kickstarter project reached a vertical slice
Armed Fantasia was introduced alongside Penny Blood in a combined Kickstarter campaign that ran from August 29 to September 30, 2022. The two-game campaign collected ¥379,328,385 from 17,920 backers, well above its ¥100 million goal. Those totals apply to both projects together, not Armed Fantasia alone.
The official project site described Armed Fantasia as a “Westernpunk” RPG with a large world map, gadget-based exploration and a turn-based battle system called Cross Order Tactics. Kaneko was credited with overall game design and the scenario.
The team had originally targeted March 2025, but postponed the launch without announcing a replacement date. In its March 2026 update, Kaneko said the developers had completed a vertical-slice build containing the main scenario, core gameplay systems and other integrated elements, then submitted it to the publisher. He also said the publisher's strategy and contractual and rights considerations limited what the team could disclose.
The filing leaves backer questions unanswered
Digital Bros says it reviewed each discontinued game's prospects against market changes and the investment still required to bring it to market. The company reported €108.5 million in fiscal-year revenue and €5.1 million in operating profit despite its impairment charges, framing the cancellations as part of a narrower publishing strategy in a volatile market.
The filing does not say what happens next to Armed Fantasia's underlying rights, completed work or Kickstarter obligations. It also does not address refunds or fulfillment for backers. Unless Digital Bros, 505 Games or the development team provides a separate update, the confirmed change is limited to the group's decision to discontinue development.
