Xbox has created Xbox Labs, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists that will explore emerging technology and turn promising ideas into experiences for players and developers.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the team will build in the open, study how people use its work and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. She also said Xbox plans to share the tools it develops with the wider industry.
Why Xbox is starting the group now
Sharma pointed to recent projects that decompiled or rebuilt games for hardware they were not designed to support. Her examples included Windows PC builds translated for Apple Silicon, games ported to browsers through WebAssembly and WebGPU, and code from one game remixed into another.
The Verge reports that many of these projects use AI models to help modders reshape games. Sharma connected the initiative to AI agents, arguing that games can be written, run and tested much like code.
The boundaries are still unclear
Sharma said the experiments could make games easier to access, revive older titles and let more players become creators. She also acknowledged that they can challenge existing business models.
Questions about intellectual property remain unresolved. The Verge said Microsoft did not respond before publication when asked about unauthorized use of game IP in decompilation and recompilation projects.
Sharma said Xbox's broader priorities are unchanged, including making games and hardware and acting as a responsible steward of intellectual property and its communities.
