Discord is rolling out automatic age grouping that sorts accounts into adult, teen or unconfirmed categories, replacing its earlier plan to ask every user to verify their age. In a September 22 announcement, co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said the rollout would happen over the course of the week and that more than 90% of users would not be asked to confirm their age.
The company says the model looks at account-level patterns, including how old an account is, its connected communities, servers and games, and general activity levels. Discord says messages, calls and other content are not used for the estimate, and that no single server, community or friend determines the result.
What each age group changes
Accounts placed in the adult group, defined as 18 and older, keep the existing Discord experience. Teen accounts, covering ages 13 to 17, retain messaging, voice calls and access to non-age-restricted servers, but receive additional protections.
Those protections route messages from non-friends to message requests, add a warning before some friend requests, blur or block sensitive images, and restrict age-gated servers, channels and bot commands. Teen profile details and activity are also shown to a narrower audience by default.
An unconfirmed status means Discord says it does not yet have enough signals to estimate the user's age group. Those accounts can continue using core features, but some adult content and settings remain unavailable until the user confirms they are an adult. Users can see their classification under User Settings > Account Status. Discord says the status is not displayed publicly on a profile or to other server members.
Correction options without a universal ID check
Discord acknowledges that the model will make mistakes. An adult placed in the wrong group can confirm their age through Account Status, with the available methods depending on region and device.
The announced options include a credit-card check routed by k-ID to Stripe, age-range sharing from Apple's App Store or Google Play, a Google Wallet passport credential in supported countries, an on-device video selfie, an ID scan paired with a selfie, and AgeKey, a reusable age credential. Discord says App Store and Google Play sharing provides an age range rather than an exact birthdate.
The company also says it receives only an age-group signal from verification vendors, not a user's name, card details, ID or facial scan. It says uploaded verification data must be deleted after the check and that facial age estimation must run on the user's device. Those are Discord's descriptions of its system and vendor requirements, not an independent privacy audit.
The rollout is not identical everywhere. Discord said its automatic estimation model was not available in the UK or Australia at the time of the announcement, and that teen protections can vary under local rules. The company directed users to its regional directory for the version that applies to their account.
