The Visual Capitalist team put together a graphic showing which nations around the world consume the most beer. They looked at data from Kirin, which found that global beer consumption in 2020 was 177.50 million kiloliters — 6.7 percent down from 2019, the first decrease in three years.

Key Takeaways

  • China consumes the most beer in the world, and has been leading for 18 consecutive years. Over the last year, though, the country's consumption went down by eight percent.

  • The US accounts for the second-largest global share of beer consumption at 13.60 percent, followed by Brazil (7.80 percent), Russia (4.90 percent), Mexico (4.70 percent) and Germany (4.40 percent).

  • The Czech Republic consumes the most beer per capita — at 181.9 liters each — making this the 28th consecutive year it's ranked first in beer per capita.

Comments

  1. Beer is inexpensive in the Czech Republic so the country gets a significant amount of drinking tourism; people who visit from other parts of Europe to spend a weekend or a few days in bars. People also drive or take buses to the Czech Republic to buy beer and take it home. I don't know if tourists drink enough beer to noticeably move the needle of consumption, but they might.

Slovakia also sees some of that, I saw both bar tourism and people coming over to buy packaged beer when I visited. It's likely that other countries in eastern Europe do as well.
