Microsoft is Finally Shutting Down Exchange Web Services (EWS) in 2027 – Here’s the Timeline
After years of warnings, Microsoft has confirmed the phased retirement of Exchange Web Services in Exchange Online. EWS will start getting blocked by default in October 2026 and be permanently disabled by April 2027. Admins can temporarily allow specific apps, but the future is Microsoft Graph only. If your tools still use EWS, it’s time to migrate.
Why it matters:
Thousands of email migration tools, backup apps, and legacy integrations still depend on EWS. Ignoring this could break workflows overnight in 2026.
Microsoft is phasing out Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online, starting in October 2026 and ending in April 2027. This change applies only to Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online. EWS will be disabled tenant-by-tenant using the EWSEnabled property. Admins can control the disablement by setting EWSEnabled to True with an AppID Allow List or to Null to re-enable EWS without restrictions. Microsoft will provide tools and communication to help with the transition to Microsoft Graph.
