The EU moves to kill infinite scrolling
Doom scrolling is doomed, if the EU gets its way. The European Commission is for the first time tackling the addictiveness of social media in a fight against TikTok that may set new design standards for the world’s most popular apps.
The EU is pushing social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram to change their addictive design features, including disabling infinite scrolling and setting strict screen time breaks. This marks the first time the Commission has set a legal standard for the addictiveness of platform design under the Digital Services Act. TikTok has said it will fight these findings, and it could face fines up to 6 percent of annual global revenue if it fails to satisfy the Commission.
