James Gunn says Clayface will remain part of DC's shared universe after the character's solo movie. In comments published by Cinemex and reproduced by ComicBook.com, the DC Studios co-head said, "This [movie] isn't the last we'll see of Clayface. And I can't wait for you guys to see what we do with him."
That confirms a future appearance for the shapeshifting Batman villain, but it does not amount to a sequel announcement. Gunn did not identify the next project, whether it would be a movie or series, or when Clayface would return.
The film is already one of the DCU's stranger genre swings. Gunn previously described it to Entertainment Weekly as a body-horror movie that happens to be set in the DCU. He said writer-director Mike Flanagan brought the idea to the studio, though Flanagan was not available to direct.
James Watkins directed the finished film, with Tom Rhys Harries playing Matt Hagen, a rising Gotham actor whose disfigurement and experimental treatment turn his body into a shape-shifting substance. Entertainment Weekly reported that Flanagan retained story and co-writing credits. The movie opens Oct. 23.
Exactly where Clayface goes next remains unresolved. When EW asked Gunn in 2025 whether the film's character was the same Clayface who appeared in the animated Creature Commandos, he declined to clarify. The new Cinemex comment promises more of the character without revealing the connection or the next destination.
